General questions about Flying Fox
What is Flying Fox Coffee Company?
Flying Fox Coffee Company is a rural, artisan mobile coffee business based near Cranbrook in Kent. We run two handcrafted coffee bars – a restored horse box and a compact Land Rover Defender – serving Monmouth single estate espresso, homemade cakes and barista-quality drinks at events across Kent, including Tunbridge Wells, Tenterden, Hawkhurst, Goudhurst, Headcorn, Staplehurst, Maidstone, Ashford, Sevenoaks and surrounding villages.
What makes your coffee different?
We serve Monmouth single estate coffee, sourced from carefully selected farms and roasted in London. It has a clean, distinctive flavour profile with plenty of sweetness and balance, which means our flat whites, cappuccinos and long blacks taste more like a specialist coffee shop than a typical coffee van. Drinks are pulled on a professional espresso machine, dialled in for each event, and made to true barista standards.
What types of events do you cater for?
We cater for a wide range of events across Kent and the South East, including weddings, outdoor festivals, village fetes, farmers markets, school fairs, sports days, corporate events, Christmas markets, community shows, farm days and private garden parties. If your event involves people gathering in Kent and you want high quality coffee, we can probably help.
Which areas do you cover?
Our mobile coffee bars travel throughout Kent and the Weald, frequently working in and around Cranbrook, Sissinghurst, Goudhurst, Tenterden, Hawkhurst, Goudhurst, Headcorn, Staplehurst, Marden, Biddenden, Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Maidstone, Ashford, Wadhurst and nearby villages. We also attend selected events close to the Kent and Sussex border. If you are unsure, send us the postcode and we will confirm whether we can cover your event.
About the horse box and Land Rover coffee bars
What is the difference between the horse box and the Land Rover Defender?
Our horse box is the larger of the two units. It has a traditional countryside feel and works beautifully at barn weddings, village greens, farm fields and larger outdoor events where there is a bit more space. The Land Rover Defender is smaller and more compact, ideal for school grounds, courtyards, driveways, village halls and tighter sites. Both bars are fully self-contained and serve exactly the same Monmouth single estate coffee and homemade cakes.
How much space do you need to set up?
The horse box usually requires a clear, level space of around 4.5 metres by 2.5 metres, with safe access for towing in and out. The Land Rover Defender is more compact and can work comfortably in slightly smaller spaces, such as a marked bay in a car park or a corner of a playground. If space is tight, you can send us a photo or a rough plan and we will advise which unit is best.
Do you need electricity or can you work off-grid?
Whenever possible we prefer a standard 13 amp plug or suitable power supply, as this keeps everything quiet and simple. For rural and off-grid locations we can arrange alternative options, such as a generator, by agreement in advance. Let us know the site layout and we will suggest the most reliable way to power the espresso machine and equipment.
How long does it take you to set up and pack down?
Set up usually takes around 45 to 60 minutes from arrival, including positioning the horse box or Defender, levelling, connecting power and dialling in the grind for the coffee. Pack down is slightly quicker. For weddings and more formal occasions we normally arrive well before guests, so everything feels relaxed and ready when people start to arrive.
Coffee, cakes and menu options
What drinks do you offer?
Our menu centres on Monmouth single estate espresso. We serve flat whites, cappuccinos, lattes, americanos, mochas, macchiatos and long blacks, along with iced coffees in warmer months. For non coffee drinkers we offer loose leaf teas, herbal infusions and hot chocolate. All drinks are freshly made to order.
Do you offer non dairy and decaf options?
Yes. We always stock oat milk as a default alternative to dairy and can provide additional options on request. We also carry a carefully chosen decaf that still tastes like proper coffee, not an afterthought, so guests who prefer decaffeinated drinks still enjoy the same high quality experience.
Can you provide homemade cakes and bakes?
We can provide a selection of homemade cakes, brownies and traybakes, baked locally with a focus on simple, honest ingredients. Choices vary seasonally and might include lemon drizzle, chocolate brownies, flapjacks or spiced loaf cakes. If you have a particular style in mind, such as rustic farmhouse cakes for a country wedding or child friendly bakes for a school fair, we are happy to tailor the selection.
Can you cater for dietary requirements?
We regularly provide options suitable for guests who need dairy free, vegetarian or gluten conscious choices. While our small setup means we cannot guarantee a completely allergen free environment, we take great care with labelling and cross contamination. If you share key dietary needs in advance, we will plan a menu that works for your event.
Bookings, pricing and payments
How do I book Flying Fox for my event?
The easiest way to book is to complete the contact form on our website with the date, location, type of event, approximate timings and an idea of guest numbers. We will reply promptly to confirm availability, suggest whether the horse box or Land Rover Defender is best, and provide a clear quote.
How is pricing worked out?
Pricing depends mainly on the length of service, the number of guests, the drinks and cakes you would like included, and the travel distance from our base in Kent. We usually work on a fixed fee for weddings and private hire, and either a hire fee plus sales, or sales only, for some festivals, markets and public events. Once we know the details, we provide a straightforward quote with no hidden extras.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes. To secure a date we ask for a deposit, with the remaining balance due shortly before the event. This allows us to reserve the horse box or Defender for you and order in Monmouth coffee, milk and ingredients specifically for your booking.
How far in advance should I book?
Popular dates in spring and summer, especially weekends, can book up several months ahead, particularly for weddings and larger festivals in Kent. If you have a fixed date, it is best to get in touch as early as you can. For weekday corporate events, school fairs or last minute bookings, it is still worth contacting us as we sometimes have gaps we can fill.
Weddings, festivals, schools and community events
How does Flying Fox work at weddings?
For weddings we usually position the horse box or Defender close to the main gathering space, such as a barn, marquee or garden area. Some couples choose coffee service immediately after the ceremony while photos are taken, others prefer evening service alongside the bar or for the next day brunch. We can match our look to a rustic, countryside or festival style celebration and coordinate timings with your venue and caterers.
Are you suitable for school events and sports days?
Yes. We often serve at school fairs, sports days and PTA events across Cranbrook, Tenterden, Goudhurst, Headcorn and nearby villages. The Land Rover Defender is especially well suited to playgrounds and car parks, as it takes up little space. We can agree a simple arrangement with the school or PTA, either as a direct hire or a percentage of takings to support fundraising.
Can you handle busy festival crowds?
Our espresso setup is chosen specifically for high demand. At festivals and larger public events in places such as Tunbridge Wells, Maidstone or Ashford, we configure the workflow for speed, with clear queuing space and efficient drink preparation. Our team is used to working under pressure while still producing consistent, well made coffee.
Do you attend village fetes and local fairs?
Village fetes and local fairs are a big part of what we do. The horse box in particular fits beautifully on village greens and farm tracks across the Weald, and the more rural and handmade the event, the more at home we feel. If you are helping to organise a fete or show in Kent and would like a coffee bar with an artisan, countryside feel, we would be very happy to discuss it.
Licensing, safety and practicalities
Do you have public liability insurance and the right certificates?
Yes. We hold public liability insurance suitable for events, maintain our equipment properly and operate in line with UK food safety standards. Certificates and documentation can be supplied to venues, schools and event organisers on request.
What about rubbish and recycling?
We use quality takeaway cups and lids suitable for hot drinks and collect our own rubbish around the unit throughout service. Where events provide recycling facilities we will separate waste accordingly. If you have particular sustainability guidelines, we are happy to work within them.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Our horse box and Land Rover are built for British weather. Light rain and wind are not a problem, and we can usually continue serving without interruption. For particularly exposed or muddy sites we may discuss access and positioning in advance to make sure we can arrive and leave safely.
How can I ask something that is not covered here?
If you have a question that is not answered in these FAQs, simply use the contact form on our website or send us an email with a few details about your event in Kent. We are a small, friendly business and will reply as soon as we can.
